Cori Lannam's Mild-Mannered
Recommendations Page

This is the part of my site where I tell you what stories I like that I didn't write.  My tastes vary according to my mood--slash, het, gen, angst, humor, I like it all.  Stories win points with me for strong characterization, plot and dialogue, but things that make me quiver and squirm will also show up on this page, regardless of the former qualities (or lack thereof).  I hope you find something you like here, and if you don't, there's a webring at the bottom of the page with links to plenty of other rec sites run by people with better taste than me.  Enjoy!

So it's not that I don't approve of the idea of Lord of the Rings slash, purist though I usually am in a don't-fuck-with-my-childhood kind of way. After all, Tolkien practically does it for us in his homosocial universe, bless his heart. The problem is that there are some fandoms which are forgiving of lesser writing ability, ignorance of canon, or, er, creative interpretations of characterization. LOTR is not one of them. This universe is very, very unforgiving, and so am I. Nonetheless, I can't seem to keep myself from reading the stuff, and I have actually found a few decent pieces that keep me from despairing over the entire thing. Now, if someone would just write me some really good Boromir/Aragorn, I would consider life-long slavery to that person. Or at least a really nice rec.

I adore Legolas/Gimli, and the best story I've seen yet is Brancher's They Say of the Elves. Brancher captures the feel of Tolkien without trying to be Tolkien, and the story is strong, sweet and very much in character, just the way I like it. Then try Keelywolfe's lovely Untying Knots for a wistful Legolas who works as well as Brancher's frustrated Gimli, from the other side of the species divide.

Hunting through Fanfiction.net for LOTR fiction is almost never a good idea, for reasons I'm sure I don't have to spell out. However, occasionally there's a gem waiting to be found underneath all the garbage. Such is Bagenders, a humor piece that works just from sheer brazenness. What if the Fellowship, as a "reward" for their service, were all granted immortality and ended up living together in a three-bedroom house in northern England, coping with 6,000 years of neuroses, psychoses and dysfunctional relationships? Few stories have ever actually made me hurt from laughing.  Ow.
